CASLIS Award for Special Librarianship in Canada

Posted by CLA Govt Library and Info Mgmt Professionals Network on 2011/04/01

(April 1, 2011 – Ottawa) The Canadian Library Association / Association canadienne des bibliothèques today announced that Ingrid C. Langhammer is this year’s recipient of the Canadian Association of Special Libraries and Information Services (CASLIS) Award for Special Librarianship in Canada in recognition of her unique contributions to special librarianship with a focus on leadership in the area of government documents in academia at McMaster University and the University of Alberta, as well as the Alberta Legislature Library.

Awarded annually since 1979, the award is intended to recognize and reward those who have made an outstanding contribution to special librarianship in Canada through professional and/or Divisional activities.  Professional activities may include research, publishing, teaching, or significant participation in other related professional associations.

Ingrid was born in England and raised in Hamilton where her love of libraries and access to information took hold of her. She has been in Edmonton for the last 30 years. Ingrid’s career began as a library page in high school. Being the daughter of a librarian, she grew up with a passion for libraries and also an avid interest in egalitarian access to information. Ingrid’s professional education includes an Honours B.A. in English Literature from McMaster University, followed by a Master in Library Sciences at Dalhousie University. While at Dalhousie, and subsequent to her Master’s, Ingrid attended the International Graduate Summer School in Librarianship and Information Science, sponsored by the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Pittsburgh and the College of Librarianship Wales, at Aberystwyth, Wales. Ingrid is a Member of Beta Phi Mu, the International Library and Information Studies Honor Society.  Honours have been bestowed on her by the William McMaster and Susan Moulton McMaster Society. Following the Master’s degree from Dalhousie, she returned for a Certificate in Business Management. She is the former Systems and Documents Librarian at the Alberta Legislature Library. Ingrid is currently pursuing PhD studies in Information Studies at Aberystwyth University, Wales. The topic of her dissertation will be related to the usage of government documents.

In addition to her professional achievements, Ingrid is a long-standing member of CLA and, specifically, a member of the CASLIS Division. She has attended almost every CLA Conference since 1977 and has been an active participant in planning programs for the CASLIS Edmonton Chapter since 1984. For many years she has been a member of the Government Publications Committee, now known as the Access to Government Information Interest Group. She has held various positions with the CASLIS Edmonton Chapter including Vice-Chairman, Chairman, Past Chairman, Program Co-ordinator and Secretary-Treasurer. Ingrid held the Secretary-Treasurer position from 1996-2009.

“We are impressed by the significant contributions Ingrid has made throughout her career, both in the area of government documents and to CASLIS and CLA”, stated Robyn Stockand, CASLIS President. “Her professional achievements and dedication to CLA have made a tremendous impact on our profession. CASLIS is thrilled to award such an outstanding role model the 2011 CASLIS Award for Special Librarianship”.

Stephen Abram Receives CLA 2011 Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award

Posted by CLA Govt Library and Info Mgmt Professionals Network on 2011/03/25

(Ottawa, March 23, 2011) – The Canadian Library Association / Association canadienne des bibliothèques is pleased to announce that the 2011 CLA Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award is being presented to Stephen Abram. The CLA Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award is generously sponsored by Bowker.

Stephen epitomizes distinguished service: in his selfless contributions to this profession, his incredible intellect, and his willingness to sacrifice popularity for what he feels is right for librarianship. Stephen consistently demonstrates responsibility to the library profession. A one-of-a-kind librarian who, when he speaks around the world never fails to identify himself as a Canadian librarian, is willing totake risks, make tough decisions, and do whatever he can to further librarianship. He has volunteered countless hours to three of the foremost library associations in North America: CLA, OLA and SLA, sometimes working away in the background on committee tasks, and other times leading the associations as President – of all three.

The following from Stephen’s C.V. shows the range and depth of Stephen’s travels through the library world over the past 3 decades: An experienced library and information industry leader with a strategic planning, product development, administration, online technology, rights negotiation, association leadership, education, publishing and marketing background. A team player with proven conceptual, analytical, and creative abilities. Able to manage cross-functional teams, complex relationships, research, keynote and board presentations, as well as market, product, service and strategy development.

Perhaps his greatest contribution to librarianship is his fostering of younger librarians. Stephen teaches, mentors, gives lectures and courses, and presents conference papers and much more. He also shares his wealth of knowledge by writing, blogging and using the internet and various other media to the fullest. He is probably one of the most connected and best connected in our field. He uses these tools not just for himself but to share with others. Stephen’s generosity of spirit and ideas is well known.

The CLA Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award will be presented at the CLA Closing Ceremonies, to be held Saturday, May 28th during the CLA 2011 National Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Canadian Library Association / Association canadienne des bibliothèques is Canada’s largest national and broad-based library association, representing the interests of public, academic, school and special libraries, professional librarians and library workers, and all those concerned about enhancing the quality of life of Canadians through information and literacy.

Lynn Copeland Receives CLA 2010 Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award

Posted by CLA Govt Library and Info Mgmt Professionals Network on 2010/05/13

(Ottawa, May 7, 2010) – The Canadian Library Association / Association canadienne des bibliothèques is pleased to announce that the 2010 Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award is being presented to Lynn Copeland. The Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award is generously sponsored by Bowker.

Over the past thirty years Lynn has helped us first to imagine and then to create the digital library in Canada. Her achievements are the result of a rare combination of vision, creativity, technical expertise, political know-how, and collaborative leadership. Without her contributions, the Canadian library scene would be less vibrant, less connected, less nimble. On many occasions, Lynn has had the foresight to move ahead with innovations that were widely adopted later by others. The fruit of her work is not only infrastructure, digital tools and collections, but an expanded vision of what libraries can be and can contribute to Canadian society.

Lynn’s work in moving libraries online began during the era of catalogue recon projects in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, and established what became a consistent theme throughout her career – collaboration amongst all types of libraries in the innovative adoption of technology. As Manager of Systems at SFU Library in the 1990’s Lynn had the vision and expertise to oversee the development of truly groundbreaking software. The development of OJAC/GODOT online requesting and linking software was innovative at the time, and is still in use across Canada and internationally today as part of the larger suite of software.

As technology and the information environment have evolved over the years, Lynn has made major contributions in the realm of digitization. Her leadership of the Canadian Heritage-funded Multicultural Canada project has resulted in a wealth of freely available online resources that highlight Canada’s diverse communities and as the current President of Canadiana.org, Lynn continues working with diligence to preserve and expose Canadian cultural heritage, providing leadership at the national level. Lynn has played a key role on the Steering Committee for the Synergies Project developing a national software platform to transform scholarly publishing and communication for Canadian humanities and social sciences from a largely print based environment to an online one.

The Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award will be presented at the CLA Awards presentation to be held Saturday, June 5 during the CLA 2010 National Conference and Trade Show in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Canadian Library Association / Association canadienne des bibliothèques is Canada’s largest national and broad-based library association, representing the interests of public, academic, school and special libraries, professional librarians and library workers, and all those concerned about enhancing the quality of life of Canadians through information and literacy.
