Event in Ottawa: The Leak Heard Round the World? Cablegate, Wikileaks, and the Evolving Global Mediascape

Posted by CLA Govt Library and Info Mgmt Professionals Network on 2012/11/05

Postponed until March 2013

Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 5:30 pm
Ottawa Public Library, 120 Metcalfe (Auditorium)

This talk explores the global media diffusion of Wikileaks’ “Cablegate” documents, a collection of US diplomatic cables leaked in collaboration with both major international media outlets and smaller regional publications.

Though Wikileaks had hoped the cables would be freely available around the globe as a catalyst for social and political change, a combination of factors ̶ including news filtering, censorship, and media competition ̶ affected how the cables circulated to, and were received by, global media audiences.

Studying these patterns of circulation allows us to see how news travels internationally in a moment when information technologies are paradoxically liberating and constraining the free flow of information.

About the Speaker
Lisa Lynch is an Assistant Professor of Journalism at Concordia University. Her research is situated at the intersection between culture, technology, and political change. As part of this work, she has been researching and presenting on Wikileaks since early 2008. Her article “We’re going to crack the world open: Wikileaks and the future of investigative reporting” (Journalism Practice, 4.3) was one of the first academic articles on WikiLeaks and explores the relationship of the media to the site in a moment when Assange and his project were still unknown to many journalists. Because of her early attention to the subject, Lisa has been interviewed extensively in the U.S. and international press about the roots of Wikileaks, the group’s intentions, and its strategies of media interaction.

When:
Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm

Where:
Ottawa Public Library, 120 Metcalfe (Auditorium)

Cost:

  • Regular – $20
  • CLA Member: $15
  • Students – $10
  • CLA Student Member – $5

Payment by cash or cheque will be taken at the door.

UBC Talk on Library and Archives Canada: Ten Years After the Merger

Posted by CLA Govt Library and Info Mgmt Professionals Network on 2012/09/28

Wednesday, October 3, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, 1961 East Mall, Dodson Room

The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, the iSchool at The University of British Columbia, cordially invites you to the first of our Fall 2012 Colloquium Series, where Julienne Molineaux will present “Library and Archives Canada, Ten Years After the Merger.”

Integration of collections and institutions in the libraries, archives and museums sector is almost commonplace now, but in the early 2000s the merger of Canada’s National Archives and National Library to create Library and Archives Canada /Bibliothèque et Archives Canada (LAC-BAC), was novel. Ten years since that process formally began it is worth asking, how is this institution faring? Restructuring does not always solve the problems it sets out to solve. Additionally, new problems are created along the way. This talk addresses two questions: have the problems that prompted the LAC merger been solved, and what new problems have emerged?

The Colloquium is free and open to the public. It will be held this Wednesday, October 3, from 12 noon to 1 p.m., in the Dodson Room of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at UBC.

Dr. Molineux is a Lecturer at the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand. She completed her PhD in 2009, examining the machinery of government reforms for New Zealand’s official archives.  She continues to research government reforms in archives, focusing her study on archives policy in both Canada and New Zealand.

For more information about this presentation as well as upcoming colloquia, please visit http://www.slais.ubc.ca/news/colloquia.htm.

So what do you do – and why do I need you – exactly? Tips on Branding for Information Professionals

Whether they like to think so or not, info pros have a brand, and the clients’ perception of that brand will influence their careers.

In this session, Ulla traces the similarities and dissimilarities between well known consumer products’ and companies’ brands and ours, discussing the need to build a professional image consciously to foster client confidence in the quality and value of our services.

Illustrating how seemingly superficial “signalers” send messages clients pick up on, Ulla provides a checklist of tips for selecting and supporting the brand we want to project.

Date: Monday, October 15, 2012

Becoming Indispensable: The Value Proposition

Information professionals’ intercollegial story telling often involves variations of “SharePoint is perceived to be the solution to every information related challenge” or “everyone is expected to be a highly skilled researcher as a result of having any graduate degree”.  It is increasingly challenging to demonstrate to employers and clients that we truly are worth our pay … but some techniques are worth considering.  Ulla speaks to strategies info pros can use to create awareness – where it counts – about the value they add to the organizations where they work.

Time: 2pm (ET)
Speaker: Ulla de Stricker

How to Construct a Superb Résumé

Cover Letters – Do They Do Us Justice?

Ulla de Stricker will show information professionals how to turn their cover letters into effective sales instruments. Come see how “ineffective” cover letters – the standard ones you may be using right now? – get transformed into powerful sales tools. You will be amazed how stripping out weak verbiage and using confident language makes a difference!

Date: Monday, February 11, 2013
Time: 7pm (ET)
Speaker: Ulla de Stricker

The Job Interview:  Projecting Competence, Confidence, and Fit with Organizational Culture

It’s one thing to produce a superb resume and expertly crafted cover letter. Going in for the “grilling” is quite another challenge. Fortunately, there is help. Ulla de Stricker distills her own experience and the best advice out there into a set of tips for convincing the potential employer you are the perfect candidate … and for diagnosing whether the employer’s culture is a good fit for you.  Specific attention is paid to “difficult” questions and the professional way to respond to them.

Information professionals use a range of technical tools in their daily activities within information organizations. The workshop covers the components of four practical yet critical tools and invites participants to discuss:

  1. Information Audits

  3. Business Cases
  4. Performance Measurement

Participants have the opportunity to take away:

  • an understanding of the roles of, and relationship between, the tools
  • guidelines for documenting user and organizational needs
  • insight into the need to “speak to decision maker motivations” as opposed to stressing “what we believe”
  • pointers how to use the tools in planning, managing, measuring, and communicating
