Event in London – Career Development and Planning Workshop

Posted by CLA Govt Library and Info Mgmt Professionals Network on 2010/05/15

Saturday, May 29, 2010, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
The University of Western Ontario, North Campus Building, Room 293

The UWO CLA Student Chapter is pleased to offer a full-day workshop on career development and planning with Ulla de Stricker.

For professionals at any stage in their working lives, Ulla explores several aspects of career development ‐ from the pragmatic to the more elusive.

Although “career planning” may be a contradiction in terms ‐ sometimes we “fall into” a job ‐ information professionals can work on their visibility and reputations to enhance their opportunities. Ulla shares her many years of insight and asks that you bring your questions and concerns ‐ there will be plenty of opportunity to discuss experiences and ideas with your peers.

Agenda:

  • Résumés: Let’s tackle the monster
Come get the definitive word on what works, how to handle “tricky” information, ways to make the resume stand out visually, and the all-important advice on making an impact in the first 3 seconds a reader looks at the document.
  • Where do you “fit”? Understanding your “career type”
Some organizational environments are inherently more attractive to each of us than others are. Knowing the types of workplace cultures out there and knowing our preferences and strengths in working within them is ad advantage in focusing the job search as well as in presenting ourselves to potential employees. Ulla discusses the elements of culture and personality that figure in a good organizational “fit”.
  • Self promotion, no cringe: Gaining visibility through giving
Professional visibility is invaluable when it comes to pitching ourselves to employers. How can we gain a reputation to precede us – without feeling awkward? Ulla describes how we can make ourselves known in the profession through activities focusing on delivering value to others.
  • Positive Politics: Building a Healthy Workplace
When a workplace “works” it is no accident. It takes concerted effort – on the part of everyone – to create an atmosphere that has team members looking forward to Mondays! Ulla outlines straightforward ways new professionals can contribute to creating a supportive and productive environment.

Resource Description and Access (RDA), the new cataloguing standard and successor to AACR2, will be released in June 2010, signalling a new direction for cataloguing rules and catalogue records. The session will demonstrate how this alignment shapes RDA’s goals and structure, and it will focus on the aspects of RDA that distinguish it from its predecessor, AACR2. The session will also address preparation for implementation.

Speaker:
Alison Hitchens is a Cataloguing & Metadata Librarian at University of Waterloo Library. Alison has held a variety of cataloguing positions in Ontario and Manitoba. She has worked as a cataloguer for the Resource Library for the Environment and the Law in Toronto, for ISM (now OCLC Canada) Library Technical Services in Winnipeg, and as the Manager of the Cataloguing Department at Library Services Centre in Kitchener. Event in London ON – Innovation and Libraries: What’s at the Heart of Libraries?

Posted by CLA Govt Library and Info Mgmt Professionals Network on 2010/01/14

Thursday, February 4, 2010, 5:30 pm to 7:15 pm
Delta London Armouries, 325 Dundas Street, Gunnery Ballroom

Can our libraries be more open and innovative? Can we be more open to our users, our communities, to core research processes, to new technologies? Can we be more open to change? How?

What are the technologies that we should be trying and piloting to see if they improve the library’s service quality and impact? Which ones are worth investigating?

What is happening in the economy?

Are there different ways to build community or to attract new community segments?

Stephen Abram is an inveterate library watcher and strategic technology for libraries futurist. In this session he shares the top technologies that we should consider for innovation. What value does the library offer in these changing times?

Speaker:
Stephen Abram is a recovering librarian having received his MLS in 1980. He is entering a 12-step program as an association junkie. He is a past President of the Canadian Library Association but he has endured the presidencies of local, provincial, and international associations. In January 2010, Stephen became Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Markets for Gale Cengage.

Stephen was listed by Library Journal as one of the top 50 people influencing the future of libraries and has received numerous honours. He holds audiences hostage for about 150 speeches a year. He writes all or parts of 6 books a year, posts thousands of blog postings and writes about 36 articles a year. He is nuts and doesn’t sleep. His columns appear in Information Outlook and Multimedia and Internet @ Schools, and SirsiDynix OneSource and he is the author of ALA Editions 2007 bestseller, Out Front with Stephen Abram. He blogs at the popular Stephen’s Lighthouse. He has two children in university and is therefore quite broke. He spent a week in Italy on holiday this past August apologizing to his wife.
