Event in Montreal – Career Planning at Any Stage

Posted by CLA Govt Library and Info Mgmt Professionals Network on 2011/01/26

One-day Workshop • Saturday, February 12, 2011 • 10:30 am to 4:30 pm

The CLA McGill Student Chapter, in collaboration with the CLA Montreal Chapter and the CLA-CASLIS Government Section, is pleased to offer a full-day workshop on career planning with Ulla de Stricker.

Whether you’re looking for your first professional position, still finishing your studies, or seeking something new, you are sure to come away from this workshop with useful tips, tricks, tools and techniques to help you advance your career in the information professions.

Although “career planning” may be a contradiction in terms – sometimes we “fall into” a job – information professionals can work on their visibility and reputations to enhance their opportunities. Ulla will share her many years of insight and asks that you bring your questions and concerns – there will be plenty of opportunity to discuss experiences and ideas with your peers.

Agenda:

Résumés: Let’s tackle the monster

Come get the definitive word on what works, how to handle “tricky” information, and ways to make your résumé stand out visually, along with advice on making that essential impact in the first 3 seconds a reader looks at the document.

Where do you “fit”? Understanding your “career type”

For each individual, some organizational environments are inherently more attractive than others. Understanding the different types of workplace cultures and your preferences and strengths in working within them can help you in focusing your job search and in presenting yourself to potential employers. Ulla discusses the elements of culture and personality that figure in a good organizational “fit”.

Self-promotion without cringing: Gaining visibility through giving

Professional visibility is invaluable when it comes to pitching ourselves to employers. How can you work to earn a reputation that will precede you – without feeling awkward? Ulla describes how you can make yourself known in the profession through activities that focus on delivering value to others.

Positive politics: Building a healthy workplace

When a workplace “works”, it is no accident. It takes concerted effort – on the part of everyone – to create an atmosphere that has team members looking forward to Mondays! Ulla outlines straightforward ways in which new professionals can contribute to creating a supportive and productive environment.

Posted by CLA Govt Library and Info Mgmt Professionals Network on 2010/07/27

Colleagues:  it is my great pleasure to submit two attachments which together provide information relating to the next two Northern Exposure to Leadership Institutes.  Please note some changes in approach as we are recruiting at this time for both the 2010 (December 2-7) and 2011 institutes (latter part of the year), and in addition and in response to success and demand, we will be increasing modestly our numbers of accepted participants.

Fax: 780-492-7925
e-mail:  ernie.ingles@ualberta.ca

Letter of Invitation/Nomination:

Dear Colleague:

Permit me this opportunity to introduce the eleventh and twelfth ‘Northern Exposure to Leadership Institutes’ (NELI), to be held in the first instance December 2-7, 2010, and in the case of the twelfth Institute, in the latter part of 2011.

NELI is intended to motivate librarians to develop leadership potential.  Our intent is to identify individuals who aggressively aspire, and who so demonstrate such an aspiration to lead libraries or information service organizations or programs in the 21st century.

The program is premised on the value of experiential learning, within the context of a beautiful but isolated Rocky Mountain venue, the Emerald Lake Lodge in Yoho National Park, British Columbia.

We encourage you to nominate individuals with demonstrated leadership potential as well as intention and an ability to share with others their vision and enthusiasm for the future of library and information service.

As we will be selecting two cohorts each of thirty-six (36) NELI participants—one for the December, 2010 and another for the 2011 Institute—we will assign your nominees to one or the other.  Thus, and unlike previous years, we will accept nominations for more than one individual from a particular institution, organization or company.  .

Your involvement is critical.  Only those nominations by employers (institutional, organizational, corporate, etc.), library and information studies schools, or library organizations will be considered.

The general criteria are as follows:

  • the nominee must be a graduate in librarianship and/or information studies from an accredited library and/or information studies program;
  • the nominee’s record should indicate accomplishment in academic performance while in school, successful employment experience, and leadership potential;
  • the nominee must be able to attend one of two five-day Institute opportunities, the first to be held December 2-7, 2010 and the second approximately one year later in 2011.  Chosen nominees will be assigned to one or other of the Institutes;
  • the nominee is responsible for a registration fee of $1950 (plus GST), and any personal or incidental expenses;
  • the nominee is responsible for transportation expenses to and from Calgary, Alberta, as well as any pre- or post-NELI accommodations in Calgary—participants will be expected to overnight in Calgary on December 1st;
  • the nominee must have been professionally employed for a minimum of two years and ideally the nominee should be employed less than seven years.

The librarians nominated will be responsible for submitting the following application package:

  • a cover letter confirming their application and their willingness to assume transportation costs, the registration fee and any incidental accommodation expenses;
  • a letter of nomination from their employer, library school or library organization;
  • a letter of recommendation from a third party, such as a current supervisor, a former professor/instructor, or anyone who knows the nominee well;
  • a prospective career development program that the nominee will develop for the purpose of fostering a pathway to a career leadership goal; and,
  • a résumé or curriculum vitae.

Please have your nominees submit their application package by noon Friday, October 1, 2010 to:

Coordinator, Northern Exposure to Leadership Institute

With warm personal regards, I am,

Ernie Ingles,
Executive Director, Northern Exposure to Leadership

Information Release

July 20, 2010

The eleventh (11) Northern Exposure to Leadership Institute (NELI) will be held in Emerald Lake, British Columbia, from December 2-7, 2010.

The Institute’s mission is to assist professional librarians aspiring to leadership roles to develop, strengthen, and evolve their leadership potential so that they may be better equipped to lead Canada’s libraries or information service organizations or programs in the 21st century.

Based on the premise of experiential learning, the Institute includes group and individual learning experiences, and the opportunity to learn in conversation with mentors, who have been chosen for their own accomplishments and their leadership skills.

Northern Exposure, at this call, will be targeting seventy-two (72) librarians, with the successful participants chosen from the nominees and assigned to participate in one of two Institutes each with a cohort of thirty-six (36) participants.  The first will be held, as noted above, in December, 2010 and the second will be held in the latter part of 2011.

Nominees must:  (1) have a desire to develop their leadership potential and aggressively aspire to visible leadership roles in library and information service organizations; (2) have received their library degrees, generally, within the past seven years; and, (3) have a minimum of two year’s professional library experience and a maximum of seven years.

Individual nominations will be welcomed from a variety of sources, including employers, associations, library and information studies programs and the corporate information services sector.  Nominees will be asked to supply a résumé or curriculum vitae, a one-page synopsis of achievements, a prospective career development program/path and their expectations for the Institute.  Those chosen as participants must secure funding to cover the registration fee and transportation to Calgary, Alberta including any pre- or post-NELI accommodations in Calgary.  Meals, accommodation as well as program and learning materials will be provided while attending the Institute.

Nominations must be received by October 1st, 2010.

You will be able to consult the NELI website after August 4, 2010.

Investing in Our Careers: Conferences are Not a Luxury

Posted by CLA Govt Library and Info Mgmt Professionals Network on 2010/05/18

by Ulla de Stricker

(This article was originally published at Information and Knowledge Management Blog.)

Receiving rave reviews from attendees, the recent annual conference of the Association of Independent Professionals (aiip.org) was a perfect case study illustrating the value of direct interaction between peers with similar interests and concerns.  The enthusiastic feedback to the organizing team focused on the long range benefits and takeaways of discovering the latest thinking in relevant topical areas, having confidence-building ‘aha’ moments, and establishing personal contacts.

The conversation among attendees about the value of the conference reflected similar comments I have heard throughout my working life.  Given the understandable personal budgetary concerns prevalent currently, I want to reiterate here – I have touched on the topic in the blog previously - the salient and universally applicable points regarding personal investment of time and money in professional conferences. Unless it just so happens a conference is held in our back yard, the out of pocket costs – shared car rides and hotel rooms notwithstanding – are significant.  But I believe they are necessary and justifiable investments:

  • The personal connections we make at a conference may last – and yield yet more connections – for our entire careers.
  • The value of the trust arising from having interacted personally cannot be overstated.
  • The concentrated dose of information about experience gained by colleagues would likely be much more time consuming to obtain via websites, social media, podcasts, etc.
  • Hearing what speakers have to say and what fellow attendees think about it right then and there is a nuanced experience offering the opportunity to ask face to face “could you give an example?”, “how did you specifically implement?”, “what should I be concerned about given my situation?”,  and so on.
  • Where there are exhibits, the conference is a unique opportunity for everyone to learn about information industry trends and for buyers to engage with vendors in detailed discussions about their products and services.  Demonstrations and brief tutorials are typically offered on the spot.

Viewed over the long career term, what we pay to be with our peers at a professional conference is worth every penny.  Of course, we arrive with detailed agendas outlining how to spend every precious hour to soak up the program offerings.  Then, using the social events to catch up with colleagues and meet new ones is a valuable bonus – requiring, of course, some stamina on top of a 10-hour day packed with activities.

Having benefited from and enjoyed (and yes, returned exhausted from) professional conferences for decades, it is second nature for me to prioritize them in my budgeting.  I encourage everyone to develop and maintain the habit:  Invest in your career – go join your peers!

Through a successful career holding senior positions in the information industry, Ulla has developed extensive expertise in knowledge and information management.
